The Verdict

Percentage vs Fixed Fees

A percentage fee sounds cheap when you're starting out. 0.45% of £10,000 is just £45 a year. However, as your wealth grows through compounding, that same 0.45% on a £250,000 portfolio costs you £1,125 every year.

Fixed-fee platforms like Interactive Investor charge a flat monthly rate regardless of how much money you have. While expensive for beginners, they become significantly cheaper for larger portfolios. The "crossover point" (where fixed fees become cheaper than percentage fees) is the most critical math any investor should know.
